Jesus Christ: The Pinnacle of All Things

Hebrews 4:13 "And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do (to whom we must give account)." 

Romans 5:6 "For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly."

If I were to take your secret thoughts and the things hidden deep in your heart and burn every single one of them onto a DVD, and then I were to take that DVD and put it into your living room DVD player, and after your family and friends had all taken their seats, I was to push play - you would run out of that room as fast as you could, for how great your shame would be.  (Either that or you would smash your TV until the images were gone.)


To have the knowledge that all things - thoughts, feelings, impulses, actions - are open and revealed as a book before God, the Author of all things, is a terrifying reality.  There is no place to hide from the Almighty God.  The shame of our sin is ever before Him and we cannot hide it.  Not even in hell itself can a sinner escape God the Father.

Hell has often times been defined as "a place of eternal separation from God".  This, however, is not the case.  Psalm 139:7-8 says, "Where can I go from Your Spirit?  Or where can I flee from Your presence?  If I ascend to Heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol (hell), behold, You are there."

God's presence is inescapable.  Heaven is home to the great benevolence and grace of God the Father, while hell is home to the great wrath and judgement of God the Father.  All things in this life are open and laid before Him and are inescapable of His presence.

As a result, we realize our helplessness and hopelessness.  Our shame at the hidden things of our hearts and minds reveals to us the wickedness of our sin and the depravity of our souls.  There is no appeasement of the wrath of God against such sin.  We are helpless... except that at the appointed time, Christ died for the ungodly.

Christ died for the secret, unveiled sins of our inner thoughts and evil desires of our hearts.  But that Christ would die for the ungodly - those who hated God and despised His ways (and all have hated God) - is a great scandal.

It would have been enough if Christ had died and brought us back to the Garden of Eden, to a state of neutrality before God.  But that Christ would take our sin and die for us, and then rise to life and clothe us with His righteousness so that we could know God and share in His glory is a scandal.  It is unfair.  It is an outrage.  Yet He is the only help and hope for our sin.

For this reason, Christ will be exalted preeminently and all will bow to Him who is sinless (Philippians 2:5-11).  "Behold!  The Lamb who takes away the sin of the world!"  "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!"


"For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.  For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die - but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:6-8).
