A Prayer: Knowing God

Over the last few days, I have had a difficult time reading any chapter in the Bible without seeing the Gospel in action.  I cannot stop meditating on the wonder of the supernatural power of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and His resurrection from the dead.

Today, I am going to be even more vulnerable with you than I have been in the past. I am going to share with you a prayer I wrote as I sought God for more knowledge of Him. May the Spirit of our great God guide you and I into the fullness and knowledge and height and depth of His Gospel.

Lord God, how can I know You? How can I really know You? I don’t want to know about You; I want to know You. Jesus said, “If you know Me, you will also know My Father. I and the Father are one.”

In the mystery of the Gospel is found every quality of God. The cross of Christ reveals every bit and drop of the fullness of the knowledge of God - if only one could fathom it. There is nothing greater than to know God.

You want to know the God of peace? Then look at the cross. See how He atoned and made peace between Himself and you by sacrificing His only Son.

You want to know the God of wrath? Look at the cross and see how God poured the full extent of His wrath and destruction upon His Son. “Go to hell,” God said to Jesus. And to hell He went, totally cut off from the Father. “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” That was the cry not of physical suffering and pain, but the cry of a soul tormented, separated totally from God.

You want to know the God of love? Then look at the cross. See from His head, His hands, His feet the blood flowing down. See how the death of Jesus was the greatest extent of love there ever could be. “Greater love has no one than this: that he lay down his life for his friends.”

You want to know the God of glory? Then look to the cross of Jesus. See how Jesus’ obedience unto death, taking the form of a human, and allowing Himself to die, raised Him higher than any Name in all the universe. “All authority has been given to Me,” Jesus said. What greater glory is there than that?

You want to know the God of compassion? Then look to the cross at calvary and bear witness to the compassion of our Father, who saw fit to sacrifice His one and only Son so that we might be saved from the second death and the wrath to come.

You want to know the God of justice? Then look to the cross.

You want to know the God of grace? Look to the cross.

You want to know the God of eternal power? Look to the cross.

For at the cross of Jesus Christ there is light and dark, glory and shame, peace and enmity, love and wrath, salvation and damnation. And at the cross of Christ there is full knowledge of the One True God. At the cross of Christ all eternity bows in humble adoration. For who can fathom the cross of Christ? Who can bear it? Who can comprehend it? Who can speak of it in its fullness? Yet the Holy Spirit living in me draws me ever closer to the great and terrible cross of Christ, and begs me to die upon it.


Look to the cross of Jesus. For there you will behold your God.

("Cougar Camp" is a week-long, summer baseball camp in my hometown for elementary school kids that my dad has organized for over a decade. Election Season Necessitates the Gospel

Not only should we pray for the salvation of lost souls in the land where we live, but I think it is our responsibility to vote. It is a liberty that God has given to us, so we ought to steward this duty well. If I were being honest (which I will be), I am a follower of the Constitution Party. The Constitution is one of the greatest, civic documents ever written, and the Founding Fathers did an excellent job in defining the role of government. The problem is the Constitution is rarely obeyed today.

Are We Living in the Last Days?

(Image courtesy of davidjeremiah.blog).  “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons…” (1 Timothy 4:1). When I was a senior in high school, I went to an FCA football camp at Taylor University. My parents dropped me off; I didn’t know a single person, although the camp was filled with a couple hundred boys my age. The unique part of the experience is that I was one of maybe a handful of light-skinned folks. The rest of my fellow campers were from Chicago public school systems; someone had paid their way to attend. Many didn’t know the Lord, but it was a great opportunity for them – and for me.
